When it comes to waterborne diseases, preventing and controlling bacteria and biofilm growth is essential. That’s why, here at Danish Clean Water, we’ve spent years researching virus prevention techniques and Legionella, one of the most widespread bacteria found in natural water systems. Our in-depth research has led us to create an eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance solution to bacteria prevention and control.

What is Legionella?

The harmful Legionella bacteria occurs naturally in water (including freshwater environments like lakes, ponds and streams) and thrives in hot water. The bacteria causes Legionnaires’ disease, a lung infection and severe form of pneumonia that can have deadly effects on those who contract it, particularly those with weakened immune systems or the elderly.

Legionella’s growth is commonly found in piping in large buildings including hospitals, hotels, and apartment blocks.

Currently, there are no vaccines that can prevent Legionnaires’  disease. Instead, the key to preventing Legionnaires’ disease is to make sure that building owners and managers maintain building water systems in order to eliminate biofilm (a bacterial breeding ground) and reduce the risk of Legionella growth and spread.

Existing Methods of
Prevention and Control

At present, there are a handful of water management programmes and traditional types of disease prevention available to prevent and control bacteria in water systems. However, our research shows that the current methods of disease prevention aren’t reliable and are often found to be hazardous to employees, harm the environment, and are inefficient to maintain in the long run.

So, what’s the problem? Most of the existing methods of bacteria control and prevention are centred around water temperature as it’s a well know fact that Legionella grows best in water with a temperature between 20°C and 45°C. The ‘high-temperature flush’ method or the ‘water temperature control’ method involves dramatically changing the temperature of the water in a bid to halt growth.

Not only does this method fail to eliminate biofilm (a bacteria breeding ground), but the drastic temperature fluctuations can damage older pipelines.  What’s more, this approach to water management requires regular monitoring of key areas for potentially hazardous conditions.

That’s why we created our own disease prevention solution, one which is safe to use, eco-friendly, and cost-effective so businesses in both the private and public sector can easily uphold their legal requirements when it comes to water safety and hygiene levels. Our ECA-technology requires only common salt and electricity for producing the highly effective NEUTHOX solution and the only residue our solution leaves behind is water and salt.

Modern Technology

In the course of a two-year project, we have documented that our NEUTHOX technology eliminates Legionella to below the limit of detection. At the same time, it prevents the new formation  of biofilm in the inner water piping systems. NEUTHOX contains  hypochlorous acid (HOCI) as an active agent, which is the very  same chemical produced by the human immune system  to fight infection.

Our technology provides benefits to hospitals, residential buildings,  hotels and sports facilities, and a number of industries where Legionella threatens the health of residents and employees.

Eco-friendly Technology

By using our in-house disinfectant NEUTHOX to tackle bacteria, not only will you effectively destroy biofilm in your piping system, but you’ll also be able to maintain a lower water temperature which results in reduced  energy loss and, in turn, less CO2 emissions.

Another eco-friendly benefit to our disinfection systems is that no harmful residue is left behind in the pipes once the disinfectant has been administered. Our disinfectant is produced on-site through electrolysis of water and salt which means that the only residue left behind is water and salt!

Members of the public, employees, and the environment are therefore protected against toxic chemicals and the successful reduction of Legionella in the water can already be measured after just a few weeks.

Economic Advantages

  • Cut down energy costs
  • Improve production

Danish Clean Water’s solutions have been scientifically proven to remove biofilm and bacteria in piping systems. In addition, the temperature of the circulating warm water can be lowered significantly which leads to reduced energy costs and big savings. For most companies, the money you’ll save on energy costs over two years will cover the cost of a DWC unit and disinfectant system. We call this an “energy-efficient Legionella solution”.

energy-efficient Legionella solution

To put this into perspective, let’s use our client Dybbol Care Home in Sonderborg as an example. By lowering the temperature of their
domestic water from 57,5oC to 45oC they made an energy saving of kWh 50.000. This was a monetary saving of DKK 20.000 per year! With an investment  into one of our generators of DKK 105.000, payback was achieved within four years.

Great energy advantages can also be achieved in the industry while still meeting energy demands and preventing Legionella from spreading from cooling towers. By fighting bacteria in a company’s cooling tower or water processor, we can lower the condensing temperature and in turn decrease the load of the compressor. In doing this, the processing industry can achieve energy savings of up to 15%. Our DCW unit ensures that the operation is maintained while the eco-friendly biocide NEUTHOX removes biofilm in heat exchangers and piping systems.

Operating Costs & Maintenance

Danish Clean Water’s technology is both effective and cost-efficient as we produce and generate our NEUTHOX disinfecting solution on-site. DCW’s clients will enjoy low annual operating costs and will find themselves saving money on energy costs and making money due to increased performance.

What’s more, a DCW unit requires very little maintenance. After commissioning our DCW unit, the system does not require any on-going daily maintenance apart from refilling salt tablets. We recommend a service every six months for changing filters and calibrating the sensor.

Legal Requirements

NEUTHOX complies with ECHA regulations and has been approved by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (and cited in HSG274 Part 2). It’s one of the safest and most effective measures of eliminating bacteria (particularly Legionella) on the market.
